2019: Book #2
Those who know me understand my deep affinity for FDR and Truman—they are two of my favorite presidents. Without their courage and decision-making ability, America may not be what it is today… free.
I just completed “The Conquerors: Roosevelt, Truman and the Destruction of Hitler’s Germany,” by noted presidential historian Michael Beschloss.
This is an outstanding book!
Beschloss takes you deep into the meetings of FDR, Churchill, and Stalin.
When FDR dies, you see new leadership emerge from the White House.
FDR was sly and cunning. He would play people against each other.
In contrast, Truman used candor all the time.
Beschloss writes, “Had Roosevelt and Truman not been so insistent not merely on conquering Germany but ensuring that it never again threatened the world, that nation might be more dangerous today.”
They weren’t perfect leaders by any means.
FDR could be tricked and fooled. He had a character flaw when it came to women…he used them.
Truman had a temper and often made rash decisions he would have to undo.
Even so, these flawed men still made an impact on the world.
Such revelations assure the reader that there is hope for us…that we too can be both flawed, yet effective leaders.
Again, GREAT read.
That’s book #2 for 2019.
