2020: Book #15

At times, it is a train wreck.
Then, you’ll turn a page and your soul will be refreshed.

That sums up Jon Meacham’s new book, “The Hope of Glory: Reflections on the Last Words of Jesus from the Cross.”

Meacham is a famed historian and one of my favorite authors.

His latest book is not about some President or world leader.

It’s about the 7 sayings of Jesus from the cross.

Meacham was asked to give 7 sermons at his local episcopal church and this book is a compilation of those sermons.

Right out of the gate, he makes it clear that he does NOT believe Jesus is the only way to heaven.  (He and I disagree on that…)

He sees the love of God “too wide” for that.

But he fully affirms the virgin birth, authenticity of the gospels, the divinity of Jesus and the resurrection.

I don’t understand how one can affirm all of that but not claim Jesus is the exclusive way.

Meacham tries to treat the story of Jesus in a historical context while applying it to us today.

There are paragraphs that are pure gold.

However, there are also passages that are disturbing,

Read at your own risk.

I give it 1.5 stars out of a possible 5.

That’s book #15 for 2020.
37 more books to go to hit 52 for the year.

Leaders are readers.
Remember, if you want to be a better leader…be a reader.
