2020: Book #37
I’m not going to be popular for this, but here we go.
I’m not a fan of Bob Goff’s latest book, “Dream Big: Know What You Want, Why You Want It and What You’re Going to Do About It.”
There are some serious Biblical issues happening in this book.
Here’s one example:
“So, what do you want? I mean, what do you really, really, really want? Get it out there. It’s not like you’re removing your own appendix to say it; it’s just not that hard to speak the words, and it will less gauze. Get a starter list going. We’ll revisit it later and build it out with more focus and intention. If you want a convertible Porsche, don’t say you want world peace. Just get real about it. Wherever you are right now, just shout out as loudly as you can, “I want a Porsche!” (pg.32)
I so want to be kind because I really do like Bob Goff.
But this is bad theology and it’s bad thinking.
First, this paragraph has the ring of “Name it and Claim it” theology. You speak what you want and either God (or the Universe) will begin to arrange things, so they come to pass for you.
Second, a Porsche? The book is about our ambitions and how to achieve them. When writing about our goals and ambitions, let’s aim higher than a Porsche. It just seems to cheapen our purpose for living. C’mon man.
Finally, deep breath here: Bob uses himself as an example a good bit in the book.
He can’t find beachfront property in Hawaii, but he is on the list for a boat slip. When that happens, he’ll get a boat be right on the water.
He and his family own a lodge in Canada and they often fly there on his plane.
“Dream Big” is more than this. There are plenty of good chapters in it.
You’ll be motivated to follow your dreams.
However, the book is massively flawed.
I’d recommend that you do NOT read it.
I give the book 1 out of 5 stars.
